US Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords shot - CNN falsely reports her death

Tucson Arizona - Today, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot, reportedly in the head, outside of a Safeway store in Tuscon today. Reports from various mainstream media outlets indicate that 12 people were shot and that 5 had died. In an earlier report by CNN, approximately around 11:45 am PST, falsely reported that she had died. In examining posts on Facebook, it was clear that several people were deeply affected by this report and one man was moved to tears and asked for his tears back when they recanted the story. Her office was vandalized last March and it was reported that she was "very afraid" after that. It was speculated that the vandalism was a result of a protest against her inclination to vote against the Health Care Bill. There are no reports that the two incidents are related. President Obama called her a good friend of his and assured the public that authorities "will get to the bottom of this" in a press conference.
If one thing is clear, people make mistakes, that is true. However, CNN should have held their reports until all facts were released. These reports do affect the public. Hopefully, mainstream media will be responsible enough to investigate the possible connections between todays events and the vandalism of her office in March.
And every bit a important, it was reported that a 9 year old little girl was killed in the shootings. I certainly hope that Obama was right and that authorities not only get to the bottom of this unfortunate and tragic incident, but that mainstream media accurately reports the facts to the public.
